Lands of Ash

by

H. L. Burke
an epic fantasy

What remains when the world burns?

After decades of Elemental Invasions, the once flourishing Kingdom of Forra has been reduced to ruins. A band of survivors pulls together in one last attempt to defend their homes and families as the Elementals make a push to wipe them out completely.

Stoic Militia Captain Karvir and his ardent brother, Ketyl, lead a skeleton force against the Fiery Horde. Everything--their families, their home, their very world--hangs on their success against impossible odds. Meanwhile across the wilderness, young Brode and his pregnant stepmother flee, hoping to find safety near the sea.

As the Elementals pour through the portals, a sacrificial act gives hope for peace, but is it sustainable? Can the human race fight back from the edge of extinction? And could the key to their survival lie in a child?

Lands of Ash is available on Amazon

About the Author:

Born a small town in north central Oregon, H. L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic.

An addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to another, being at times completely obsessed with various books, movies, or television series (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Star Trek all took their turns), but she has grown to be what she considers a well-rounded connoisseur of geek culture.

Married to her high school crush who is now a US Marine, she has moved multiple times in her adult life but believes that home is wherever her husband, two daughters, and pets are.

She self-published her four part fantasy/romance series "The Scholar and the Dragon," followed by YA Steampunk Fantasy Beggar Magic, and a children's chapter book. She is now working on an epic fantasy trilogy.

Katy Huth Jones

Every author has a story to tell.  Today, I am happy to bring you Katy Huth Jones's story.  In this brief interview, she explains what inspired her to write Mercy's Prince.  I invite you to a moment and get to know our spotlight author.  I’ll call this:

Katy Huth Jones: In her own words

How did you get your start as an author?

I began writing the "traditional way," meaning collecting over 600 rejection letters before publishing my first short story in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword & Sorceress anthology. I did a lot of magazine work before I got into books. I honestly did not intend to become an "indie author," but when the small publisher who did my two MG fantasies went out of business, I didn't want those books to die and so republished them as Quinlan Creek Press. We homeschooled for 25 years, and our school name was Quinlan Creek Academy. My youngest son designed the logo. For my Mercy books I half-heartedly tried to find an agent (at the urging of one of my critique partners, who has published over 20 books) but the market for YA Christian fantasy is pretty small, so I decided to go ahead and self-publish them. They are a labor of love more than a money-making venture, after all. I hope to find more readers, because I do believe the story will affirm and uplift those who are suffering.

What inspired you to write Mercy's Prince?

This story germinated when my oldest son and I first saw the fantasy movie "Willow" in 1988 and I did not like the "strong" female character, who would kick a man in the face and then later kiss him. Ugh! My story was a reaction to that, because I believed a female character could so easily be truly strong. Unfortunately, even several drafts later, my story didn't work because I was forcing a plot on a set of characters whom I had not taken the time to truly know and understand. So I set it aside and wrote several other novels.
Mercy's Prince is available at Amazon in both Kindle and paperback formats:
 http://www.amazon.com/Mercys-Prince-Katy-Huth-Jones-ebook/dp/B0115KNDS4

Why do you think that you were able to re-write Mercy's Prince successfully the second time around?
Early in 2011 my beloved father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and as part of my "grief therapy" while helping my mother care for him, I gave myself a writing assignment: Throw away everything about that original story except the opening scene, and just listen to the characters, letting them tell me THEIR story. It has been the most exhilarating writing I've ever done. Now 400,000 words later I have one published book, the second with the editor (Mercy's Gift), the third almost completed (Mercy's Children), and the fourth (Mercy's King) and fifth (Mercy's Joy) books outlined. Proof you CAN teach an old dog new tricks....
I love that your work supports your work.  I know you said that your youngest son designed your logo, is there anyone else you would like to mention?

My son Robert Jones took the author photo; I have a book coming out in January from a traditional publisher and they asked for an updated photo. This is the shot my editor chose, so I'm using it across social media. The picture [of] "Valerian Mercy and Albinonix" are the results of two summers my young writing niece spent with me. She's been my most enthusiastic fan of this story, and suggested sewing projects: first the dragon, then the character dolls. I didn't have a pattern for the dragon and still haven't figured out how to attach wings, but they were fun to do!

Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  I know your readers will be inspired by your passion.

 Mercy’s Prince
Tagline: A heart of peace in a time of war....

Mercy's Prince is a YA Christian fantasy, the first of a planned series of five book, though it can stand alone. It is available in on Amazon in e-book or paperback.

Readers rave, "The action is heart-stopping, the love is pure, and the emotions are real."

Author, Katy Huth Jones invites you to dive to her epic tale of a boy, Valerian, who would rather not be king.  However, like so many things in life, the choice is not his.  Setting aside his personal dreams, he accepts his destiny. Armed with a brave heart and Mercy's love, he sets out to enlist the aid of the only beings strong enough to bring peace to his kingdom--dragons.
 Backcover Blurb:

As the second son of the King of Levathia, seventeen-year-old Valerian desires the quiet life of a scholarly monk. But when he fails to save his older brother in battle, Valerian must instead become crown prince.

While a traitorous knight schemes against him, Valerian meets Mercy, a pacifist Healer with whom he can speak mind-to-mind like the great dragons. Their bond emboldens Valerian to seek out the legendary dragons and ask for their help against the monsters who killed his brother.
Can Valerian survive the traitor's assassins long enough to find the dragons? And if he does, can he convince them to lay aside their hatred of humans and help him save the land from destruction!

A multi-talented author

Bio

Biography
C.L. Wells is a JANE-OF-ALL-TRADES, with a passion for writing and animals. She lives in Kansas with her family, which includes a fat doggie who is not named Toto and a cat who moonlights as an escape artist. Feel free to ask her about the ‘escape artist.’ She plans to write about it someday. She would love hearing from you.
It’s all true. But since there’s so much room in here, I can be a bit more specific.
JANE-OF-ALL-TRADES means I dabble… a lot. One of my favorite things to dabble in is photography. I took a few classes about a hundred years ago and I’ve never let it go. I’ve shot several weddings and tons of senior pics. I also took the photo of the girl who is featured on my book. Yep, kinda proud of myself for that one.
We are a family of four. Two adults and two fur-monsters. My spouse, whom I call my ‘honey of twenty’ because we’ve been together for that long now, are big animal lovers. Both of our fur-monsters are seniors. Our dog is approximately thirteen and our cat is a whopping seventeen-years-old. No lie. He’s still spry as ever, too!
I’ve been wanting to write a book for about a hundred years now. For too long, I let life get in the way. Sometimes I told myself I was crazy for thinking it. Didn’t have the time. Wouldn’t be good enough. Can you hear the negativity? Yep, I had to shut that voice down. My better half is one of those people who are so positive that it can be annoying. Mostly because he’s usually right. So thanks to him… well, thanks to God first and foremost, I wrote my first book and am now working on my second, which is the sequel.
If you seriously just read all of this… thank you! I would love to connect with you, so pick your poison (social media) and drop me a line.
Peace, Peeps!

June is Alzheimer's and Brain AwarenessMonth

In the SPOTLIGHT

Beyond Still Alice
5 Books on Alzheimer’s You May Have Missed

What do you know about Alzheimer’s? Anything? What should you know about Alzheimer’s? Something.

This is not just our parents’ disease. It’s a problem that has far-reaching complications, not only wreaking havoc in the life of the one afflicted, but in the lives of all those surrounding him or her: spouse, children, grandchildren, siblings, friends, caregivers, and the greater community. Its impact is exponential: For each one of the 5.3 million Americans diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, there are another 5.3 million (at the very least) affected. (Alz.org) These people are our families, neighbors, co-workers, friends, and acquaintances. As our lives intersect and intertwine, this disease affects all of us.

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Take some time this month to learn more about this illness, to understand what it means to those who love someone afflicted, to those who dedicate themselves to seeing they are cared for, and ensuring that their lives continue to have meaning and dignity.

There are many ways to become educated about a condition or disease. With Alzheimer’s, there are hundreds of books available to explain it, advise what to do about it, how to handle it, and offer solutions and support for caregivers. These are excellent resources.

However, stories that enlighten through the careful balance of useful facts and a cast of relatable and realistic characters may be a better way to shed light on this and many other medical issues. This type of presentation enables the reader to get inside the head of the Alzheimer’s patient, their caregivers, spouse, children, and other loved ones. It’s up close and personal, not clinical and removed.

Here are five titles to get you started. Three are memoirs, two are novels. Two are written by women who did double duty at the same time, caring for both mother and father as they suffered from dementia and Alzheimer’s. Another is the story of a woman healing her relationship with her mother after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. One is written by a novelist wanting to pay tribute to those who rise to the difficult challenge of serving as caregiver to a loved one with this disease. One is written by a nurse who worked with hundreds of Alzheimer’s patient and their families.

Alzheimer’s is a frightening possibility, but to meet it without knowledge or an understanding of its implications increases despair and hopelessness and strips one of the power to make competent decisions and access necessary supports and resources. Knowledge gained through literature can be as practical and useful as any self-help or how-to manual.

Alzheimer’s Daughter, a memoir
by Jean Lee

Image of Alzheimer's Daughter courtesy of Jean Lee

"I wrote what I needed to read as I traveled through the caregiving journey."

What would you do if both parents were diagnosed?

At the time of their diagnosis, Ed Church struggles to his feet, yelling, “How dare you use the A. word with me,” while Ibby wags her finger at the doctor scolding, “Shame on you.”

They defend each other, Ibby by asserting, “We’re not leaving our home,” and Ed reassuring, “We’re just fine.

About his driving Ed states, “I’m an excellent driver, I’ve never had an accident.”

After Rosie moves them to assisted living, convinced they are on a second honeymoon, they break the news, “We’ve decided not to have more children.”

In the late stages, they politely shake Rosie’s hand, inquiring, “Now, who are you?”

In Alzheimer’s Daughter readers journey with the author from her first suspicions that something is awry to a decade later as she is honored to hold Ed and Ibby’s hands as they draw their last breaths.

Somebody Stole My Iron, A Family Memoir of Dementia
by Vicki Tapia

Image of Somebody Stole My Iron... courtesy of Vicki Tapia

“I wrote my story to offer hope to others whose lives have been intimately affected by this dreadful disease, to reassure them that they’re not alone.”

How would you cope if your loved one’s mind gradually slipped away?

Navigating the waters of dementia can be frightening, unleashing a myriad of emotions for everyone involved, precipitating anxiety and grief, anger and frustration, extreme sadness and feelings of hopelessness.  After Vicki Tapia’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, followed closely by her father with Parkinson’s disease-related dementia, she struggled to find practical, helpful information to light her way.  Somebody Stole My Iron began as a diary to help her cope but emerged as a road map for others.  It offers a glimpse into her family's life as they rode the waves of dementia, sometimes sailing, other times capsizing.  This engaging memoir offers useful information from experts in the field of Alzheimer's research, personal lessons the author learned along the way, and ideas/tips for managing the day-to-day ups and downs of dementia.

Somebody Stole My Iron chronicles the tenacity of Vicki’s mother as she fought her way through the tangled and bewildering labyrinth called dementia.  Above all, it is a story of holding on and ultimately learning to let go, transcending the pain and turmoil to discover both an abiding love and a tender compassion.

 Still Time, a novel
by Maria Hoagland

Image of Still Time courtesy of MMaria Hoagland

“Medical and family drama are intriguing to me, but it wasn't the unusual that grabbed my attention for this book. I wanted to spotlight the stalwart courage and strong character that are revealed when someone has to rise to a difficult challenge. I believe we all have it in us to confront our trials, face them head-on, and gracefully endure, and what better way to show that than a mother and caregiver who sacrifices her all for someone she loves?”

Thrust into the chaos of her mother-in-law’s hoarding and forgetfulness, LDS church member Alyssa Johnston wishes she could retreat to a simpler time when her kids were small and almost anything could be fixed with a hug. But reassurance and a quick distraction no longer erase the pain of a missionary son who is struggling, a young teen who is bullied, or a daughter who is distant. As Aly’s own life and relationship with her husband plunge out of control, she wonders if her faith will be enough to keep her family—or herself—from falling apart. Still Time is a deeply moving story about a woman’s faithful journey into the next phase of her life. You will laugh with Aly, feel her sorrow, and see yourself in Maria Hoagland’s realistic, heartfelt portrayal of a woman’s struggle to keep her family safe and hold back time as long as she can.

My Mom My Hero, a memoir
by Lisa Hirsch

Image of My Mom My Hero courtesy of Lisa R. Hirsch

“My mother touched me greatly after she showed signs of Alzheimer's. As a long distant caregiver, speaking to her every day, I found myself falling in love with her. I wrote down everything she said so I would never forget it. This is now my book, My Mom My Hero.”

When Lisa found out her mother, Ruth, had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, her love, appreciation, and caring for her mother was transformed. My Mom My Hero tells the story of this loving mother-daughter relationship. This is an uplifting and inspirational book for anyone going through the difficult and often lonely ordeal of caring for a loved one who suffers from this devastating illness.

Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer’s love story, a novel
by Marianne Sciucco

Image of Blue Hydrangeas courtesy of Marianne Sciucco

“This is a story I wrote from the heart after witnessing the pain and heartbreak of many couples and families struggling with Alzheimer's disease.  The characters are loosely based on one couple I met in my work as a registered nurse. Blue Hydrangeas is my attempt to bring consolation and understanding to all who encounter Alzheimer's.”

What if the person who knew you best and loved you most forgot your face, and couldn't remember your name?

A nursing facility is everyone's solution for what to do about Sara, but her husband, Jack, can't bear to live without her. He is committed to saving his marriage, his wife, and their life together from the devastation of Alzheimer's disease. He and Sara retired years ago to the house of their dreams and operated it as a Cape Cod bed and breakfast named Blue Hydrangeas.

Jack has made an impossible promise: He and Sara will stay together in their beautiful home no matter what the disease brings. However, after nine years of selfless caregiving, complicated by her progressing Alzheimer's and his own failing heart, he finally admits he can no longer care for her at home.  With reluctance, he arranges to admit her to an assisted living facility. But, on the day of admission, Sara is having one of her few good days, and he is unable to follow through. Instead, he takes them on an impulsive journey to confront their past and reclaim their future. In the end, he realizes that staying together at any cost is what truly matters.

What people are saying about this series:

*****Ok, I'm totally hooked! I can't wait for 'Unexpected Beginning'! Every time I think I know what is going to happen next, there's an unexpected twist that I have to adjust to. Alissia is a damaged but indomitable heroine with a lot of issues, grit and pure stubbornness. Her metamorphosis is more than purely physical as you continue thru the series, but she still remains true to herself. She is determined to forge her own path but fate keeps tossing her challenge after challenge. I would strongly encourage you to start at the first book and work your way through. This author is obviously one to keep an eye on...........

*****Great imagery and attention to detail. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series from an up-and-coming author.

*****Loved this book! The author did a great job with the "unexpected." I found myself going from one emotion to the next. Excitement, frustration, joy, and ending with anxious anticipation of what will happen next in Alissia's adventures. Can't wait for book three.

Tainted Dreams

A man with a past and a woman fighting for her future--will his past destroy their future?

Excerpt: (Kate meets a man from Jake’s past.)

Kate entered the hotel lobby and stood behind William and Margaret. While she waited for Jake to join her, she gazed around the spacious room.

Rag rugs dotted the gleaming pine board floor and a marble-topped oak desk sat in the back left corner. Navy plaid curtains on both windows—one overlooking the front steps and the other facing the alley—were pulled closed, yet the room was well lit by three oil lamps and warmed by flames flickering in the stone fireplace at the back wall.

Behind her, Jake shut the door and then stepped so close she felt the brim of her hat brush against his chest.

Jake—the man who'd hired on as her family's guide across the Oregon Trail.

Jake—the man who'd supported her through the darkest time of her life.

Jake—the man she loved.

"William! You're finally here!" The man Kate assumed to be William's uncle rose to his feet and hurried around the desk and across the room. Though by the creases around his eyes he looked to be in his early forties, he had hair the color of coal, broad shoulders, and a trim waist. His clothing, while outdated by nearly a decade, was impeccable, and a brown silk cravat perfectly arranged at his neck and embellished with a gold pin completed the outfit.

This man was a welcome change from the other men she’d seen so far in the town.
"I've been waiting for you to walk through that door for weeks." He grabbed William into a fierce hug, then pulled back to look at him again. "I was worried you'd run into trouble."

"We did," William replied.

"We?" William's uncle finally took note of the others lingering at his door. His eyes scanned the ragged group, narrowed briefly when they reached Jake, and then returned to his nephew.
William removed his hat and beckoned Margaret a few steps forward to join him. "Uncle Theodore, I'm proud to introduce you to my wife, Margaret. We married the day before departing from Independence."

Theodore took Margaret's hand and bowed with a grace and confidence Kate hadn't seen since the ballrooms of Virginia. "Please pardon my initial shock. My nephew is a lucky man to have a bride as lovely as you."

"Thank you," Margaret murmured, absently running her free hand along the curve of her waist.

"You're welcome." Theodore released her hand. "ʺI consider it a privilege to have you as a member of our family." He straightened and eyed the lobby doorway, where Kate still waited with Jake at her back. His smile faded. "William, you mentioned trouble earlier, a fact that doesn't surprise me now that I see who you kept company with on the trail."

Kate's mouth dropped open. What had she or Jake done to offend this man?

"The return to civilization can be a tough adjustment." Theodore motioned to William's bare head, then to his hat clutched against his leg. "I'm pleased to see you haven't forgotten the formalities of polite society."

Kate's cheeks flamed. Propriety had been ingrained in her since birth, but she'd only been wearing a man's hat since July—her father's hat, willed to her on his deathbed. While she had no intention of replacing it with a bonnet any time soon, she did intend to do her best to act according to society's conventions. She quickly pulled off the hat and ran her free hand from her forehead to her collar several times in a futile attempt to tame her wild curls.

Sighting Theodore's slack-jawed astonishment, Kate bit her tongue to stifle a laugh. He likely regretted his pointed words; she didn't need to further add to his embarrassment.

"Seems your companion has better manners than you." Theodore nodded toward Jake, who, to Kate's surprise, still hadn't removed his hat.

"Seems so," Jake replied, slowly pushing up the brim with one finger.

Kate kept quiet, but wondered what would possess Jake to purposely be so rude to someone he'd just met. Especially a prominent business owner, one that could potentially serve as an ally if she ran into trouble with her future plans.

"William," Theodore said, smoothly turning to address his nephew again, "who is this beautiful creature hiding beneath those ill-fitting clothes?"

William glanced at Jake and gave a nearly imperceptible shrug of apology, then focused again on his uncle. "I'm pleased to introduce Katherine Davis—"

"And the infamous trail guide, Jake Fitzpatrick," Theodore finished.

"You know each other?" William asked, his tone mirroring Kate's own surprise.

Jake gave a curt nod. "We've met."

"And then some." Theodore's laugh seemed more smug than jovial. "We came across the trail together a few years ago."

Margaret clapped her hands together in delight. "Isn't that something? Two friends meet again after all this time."

"Friend isn't a word I'd use to describe him," Jake said, removing his hat and stepping beside Kate in one fluid move.

About the Story:

Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is desperate to see his little sister freed. But only victory in the Krillonian Empire's most prestigious tournament will allow him to secretly arrange for Ellie's escape. Dangerous people are closing in on her, however, and Bensin is running out of time.  With his one hope fading quickly away, how can Bensin save Ellie from a life of slavery and abuse?

What is the Collar for, and What is a Cavvarach?

The story is set in a world very much like our own, with just a few major differences.  One is that slavery is legal there.  Slaves must wear metal collars that lock around their neck, making their enslaved status obvious to everyone.  Any slave attempting to escape faces the dilemma of how and where to illegally get their collar removed (a crime punishable by enslavement for the remover).

Another difference is the popularity of a martial art called cavvara shil.  It is fought with a cavvarach (rhymes with "have a rack"), an unsharpened weapon similar to a sword but with a steel hook protruding from partway down its top edge.  Competitors can strike at each other with their feet as well as with the blades.  You win in one of two ways: disarming your opponent (hooking or knocking their cavvarach out of their hands) or pinning their shoulders to the mat for five seconds.

Amazing Grace

(Hymns of the West: Book 3)

Welcome visitors of the Amazing Grace Tour.   Thanks for stopping by to support the tour.

"God and I decided you needed a new husband."

The release of a new book is an exciting time for an author.  After months of plotting, planning, listening to characters in your head that no one else can hear (which is NOT the same as hearing voices in your head, just so you know), editing, polishing, and revising for the twentieth time, you are ready to publish your book.  You love your characters, after all you have lived with them for months--cried with them, laughed with them, sat up nights with them, watched them fall in love, and held their hand through the trials and tribulations of life.  As exciting as it is to finish, it is scary as well.  The what ifs drive you crazy.  What if people don't like my book?  What if no one buys it? No worries for my spotlight author.

Faith Blum’s new novel, Amazing Grace is the third book of her series, Hymns of the West.  Amazing Grace takes us back in history to the time of mail-order brides.  At its heart, Amazing Grace tells the story of Caleb, a non-believer, and Maggie, a believer.   Along the way you get to meet a few other characters who make the story a delightful read. I think you will enjoy this Christian romance, so without further ado, here is an excerpt from Amazing Grace.

Excerpt:

One day, as Rachel was cleaning the small apartment, she prayed and thought out loud. “God, I don’t mean to complain, but I miss my daddy. With no daddy, Mum is too busy and she’s always worried. She is gone a long time, but still doesn’t make enough money. I wish I could help somehow, but I can’t. All I can do is pray, try to keep the apartment clean, pray, and love Mum. And yes, God, I know I said pray twice. But it seems like the only thing I can do. I wish I had a new daddy.”

Rachel stopped sweeping the floor as this new thought made its way through, in, and around her brain. “With a new daddy,” Rachel whispered to herself, “Mum wouldn’t worry so much and I could see Mum more and have a daddy to help raise me.” Rachel sighed. “But who could she marry?” Rachel asked the apartment in general. “She’s gotten offers before, but all of them were bad men. God, we have to find another way to do it! There’s just got to be a way for Mum to get married again and have more children and maybe even fall in love again.” She grinned from ear to ear. “Please, God?”

Just then, the door swung open and Maggie stepped through.

“Mum!” Rachel exclaimed.

Maggie started at Rachel’s loud voice. “Hello to you, too, Rachel. Why are you so excited?”

“God and I decided you need to find a new husband.”

Maggie nodded—not at all the response Rachel thought she would get. Although her mum did seem distracted.

Maggie walked into the kitchen while Rachel wandered after her. “I actually had the same idea today,” she said as she grabbed a cabbage to cut.

“You did?” Rachel asked.

Maggie nodded again. “While I was at work, one of the older ladies asked if I would ever consider getting married again. I said I might if I met the right man. She told me about her son, who lives out west, and how he married a mail order bride.” She scraped the chopped cabbage into the pan on the table and poured some water in. “She said it might be worth a try.”

Rachel stirred the thin cabbage soup while Maggie finished cutting up the cabbage.

When all the cabbage was cooking in the pot, Maggie leaned back against the table. “I’ve been praying about it ever since. I think God wants me to do it.” She gave a short, forced laugh. “I’m not sure why or how, though. And I never would have thought I would become a mail order bride, or that God would say, ‘Do it Maggie.’ What do you think, Rachel? Am I crazy?”

Rachel put the spoon down, took a step toward her mum, and put her arms around her waist. “You could never be called crazy, Mum. I think it is a wonderful idea, and God is the one who gave the lady the idea to talk to you. If it works, wonderful! If it doesn’t, we’ll know it wasn’t really God’s will.”

If you are intrigued and want to read more about Maggie's crazy courageous decision to become a mail-order bride, you can buy Amazing Grace at Amazon.com.

About H. L. Burke

Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H.
